47 INDIANS RESCUED FROM CYBER SCAM CENTRES IN LAOS

Event: On August 29, the Indian Embassy in Laos rescued 47 Indian nationals from cyber scam centres within the Golden Triangle SEZ in Bokeo province.

The embassy has issued a strong warning to Indian citizens about fraudulent job offers in Laos and advised thorough verification before accepting job offers.

DETAILS OF THE RESCUE OPERATION

    • Total Rescued: 47 Indians.
    • Breakdown of Rescue Sources:
      • 29 individuals were rescued by Laos authorities following their crackdown on illegal operations in the Golden Triangle SEZ.
      • 18 individuals approached the Indian Embassy directly in distress, seeking urgent help.
    • Conditions: Rescued individuals reported severe deprivation, including lack of food and rest, if they failed to meet their daily work targets.
  • Scam Mechanism:
    • Impersonation Tactics: Scammers used fake profiles on dating apps to engage potential victims, eventually convincing them to invest in cryptocurrency trading schemes.
    • Exploitation: Victims were subjected to harsh conditions and high-pressure tactics to ensure they met daily financial targets.
  • Embassy Actions:
    • Advisory Issued: The Indian Embassy issued a comprehensive advisory warning Indian nationals about the risk of fake job offers in Laos and urging them to verify the authenticity of any job offer through reliable channels.
    • Operational Coordination: Embassy officials traveled from Vientiane, the capital of Laos, to Bokeo to work closely with local authorities on the rescue operation.
    • Repatriation: The embassy has facilitated the repatriation process, with 30 individuals having already returned to India or en route, while the remaining 17 are awaiting final travel arrangements.

    • Previous Rescues: In the previous month, the Indian Embassy had also rescued 13 Indians from similar situations, further highlighting ongoing issues with cyber scams in Laos.
