AMRIT BHARAT STATION SCHEME
Context
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated 75 redeveloped railway stations across 20 States from Jalandhar, Punjab.
- The stations have been redeveloped under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS), one of the world’s largest railway station modernization programmes.
- The redevelopment aims to improve passenger amenities, enhance connectivity, preserve local heritage, and promote regional economic development.
ABOUT AMRIT BHARAT STATION SCHEME
- The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS) is a flagship initiative of the Ministry of Railways for the long-term redevelopment and modernization of railway stations across India.
- The scheme seeks to transform railway stations into modern, accessible, passenger-friendly, and environmentally sustainable transport hubs.
- It focuses on improving station infrastructure while incorporating local culture, heritage, and architectural identity.
- The redevelopment follows the vision of “Virasat Bhi, Vikas Bhi”, which emphasizes preserving heritage alongside promoting modern development.
KEY HIGHLIGHTS
- 75 redeveloped railway stations were inaugurated across 20 States.
- The stations were redeveloped at a total cost of approximately ₹1,570 crore.

NEW TRAIN SERVICES FLAGGED OFF
The Prime Minister also inaugurated two important railway services:
Kartoli–Ambala Train
- The new train service will strengthen connectivity between Punjab, Haryana, and Himachal Pradesh.
- It is expected to improve regional mobility and facilitate economic activity.
Sant Ravidas Express
- The train will operate between Amritsar (Chheharta) and Varanasi.
- It establishes a direct rail link between two important religious and cultural centres associated with Guru Ravidas.
OTHER INFRA PROJECTS INAUGURATED
- The Prime Minister inaugurated and dedicated rail and road infrastructure projects worth over ₹5,470 crore in Jalandhar.
- He inaugurated the 9-km Package-6 of the Delhi–Amritsar–Katra Greenfield Expressway.
- The projects are aimed at improving transport connectivity, passenger convenience, logistics efficiency, and regional economic growth.
INDIA’S FIRST HYDROGEN POWERED TRAIN
- Prime Minister Modi flagged off India’s first hydrogen-powered passenger train from Jind Railway Station in Haryana.
- The train will operate between Jind and Sonipat, covering a distance of 89 kilometres in approximately two hours.
- Hydrogen-powered trains produce significantly lower emissions compared to conventional diesel-powered trains and support India’s clean energy transition.
