INDUS-X SUMMIT
The third edition of the India-U.S. Defense Acceleration Ecosystem (INDUS-X) Summit took place on September 9-10, 2024, in California.
A. The event marked significant progress in enhancing defense innovation collaboration between India and the USA.
B. It was organized jointly by the S.-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) and Stanford University.
KEY HIGHLIGHTS
- Memorandum of Understanding (MoU): A key outcome of the summit was the signing of an MoU between Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) and the Defence Innovation Unit (DIU) from the S. Department of Defense. This agreement aims to boost cooperation in defense innovation and promote partnerships among industry, research, and investment stakeholders.
- New Initiatives: The summit announced a new change under the INDUS-X initiative, released the INDUS-X Impact Report, and launched the official INDUS-X webpage on both the iDEX and DIU
- Platform for Innovation: The summit provided a platform for showcasing next-generation technologies developed by startups and small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). It also facilitated important discussions through the Senior Advisory Group and Senior Leaders Forum. Key topics included future technology trends, startup capacity building, funding opportunities for defense innovations, and strengthening defense supply chains.
Participation
- Delegation: The Indian delegation was led by Joint Secretary (Defence Industries Promotion) Amit Satija. He highlighted that the summit reinforced the commitment of both countries to advancing defense technology through innovation and strategic collaboration.
- Attendees: The event saw participation from experts in the defense industry, investment firms, startups, academia, think tanks, accelerators, and policymakers from both nations.
ABOUT INDUS-X
- About iDEX: Innovations for Defence Excellence (iDEX) is a flagship program of the Indian Ministry of Defence. It was launched in 2023 during the state visit of the Prime Minister of India to the US.
- It aims to promote innovation in the defense and aerospace sectors by partnering with startups, innovators, SMEs, incubators, and academic institutions. iDEX provides grants and support for research and development projects with high potential for future adoption in Indian defense and aerospace.
- Funding: iDEX is managed by the Defence Innovation Organization (DIO), a non-profit company established under the Companies Act 2013. The DIO is funded by Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) such as HAL and BEL.
