INTERNATIONAL ABHIDHAMMA DIVAS

India, the birthplace of Buddhism, is home to numerous sacred sites that reflect its profound spiritual legacy. Key locations like Bodh Gaya, where Gautam Buddha attained enlightenment, serve as symbols of his teachings. Central to Buddha’s philosophy is the Abhidhamma, which emphasizes mental discipline and self-awareness, forming a cornerstone of Buddhist thought.

  • On 17th Oct 2024, The International Abhidhamma Divas was celebrated globally to honor the significance of the Abhidhamma in guiding ethical conduct and mental discipline.
  • This day highlights the deep connection between Buddhism and India, where Buddha’s teachings continue to inspire individuals pursuing mindfulness and inner peace.

HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE

  • The celebration commemorates Lord Buddha’s descent from the Tāvatiṃsa-devaloka (celestial realm) to Sankassiya in Uttar Pradesh, a moment marked by the Asokan Elephant Pillar.
  • According to Theravāda Buddhist texts, Buddha spent three months teaching the Abhidhamma to deities, including his mother.
  • The observance coincides with the conclusion of the Rainy Retreat (Vassa) and the Pavāraṇā festival, during which monks and nuns conclude their retreat.

TEACHINGS OF ABHIDHAMMA

The Abhidhamma, or “Higher Teaching,” offers a systematic analysis of mind and matter, diverging from the everyday language of the Sutta Piṭaka to a more analytical approach. It delves into the nature of existence, addressing birth, death, and mental phenomena with precision.

KEY CONCEPTS

  • Citta: Consciousness
  • Cetasika: Mental factors
  • Rūpa: Materiality
  • Nibbāna: Final liberation

These terms create a specialized vocabulary that helps practitioners gain deeper insights into Buddhist philosophy and psychology.

Historical Context:

Traditionally, it is believed that Buddha first taught the Abhidhamma to gods in Tavatimsa heaven and later to his disciple Sariputta, who expanded upon it in the Abhidhamma Piñaka—a collection of texts covering various aspects of mental states, aggregates, and causal relationships.
