- The celebration commemorates Lord Buddha’s descent from the Tāvatiṃsa-devaloka (celestial realm) to Sankassiya in Uttar Pradesh, a moment marked by the Asokan Elephant Pillar.
- According to Theravāda Buddhist texts, Buddha spent three months teaching the Abhidhamma to deities, including his mother.
- The observance coincides with the conclusion of the Rainy Retreat (Vassa) and the Pavāraṇā festival, during which monks and nuns conclude their retreat.

On October 17, 2024, Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi hosted the International Abhidhamma Divas, organized by the Ministry of Culture in collaboration with the International Buddhist Confederation (IBC). This year is particularly significant due to the recognition of Pali as a classical language.
