MAHA WATER MISSION
Why in News?
- The Government of India has launched the MAHA Water Mission, a ₹200 crore initiative jointly implemented by the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF) and the Ministry of Jal Shakti to support innovation and technology development in the water sector.
- The mission was launched by Union Minister of State for Science & Technology, Earth Sciences Jitendra Singh.
- The programme aims to support startups, MSMEs, universities, research institutions and industry partners in developing scalable solutions to India’s growing water challenges.
WHAT IS THE MAHA WATER MISSION?
- The MAHA Water Mission has been conceived as a national innovation platform designed to accelerate technological solutions in the water sector.
- The mission seeks to bring together:
- Science and technology institutions
- Universities
- Research organisations
- Startups
- MSMEs
- Industry partners
- Government agencies
- Grassroots stakeholders
- The objective is to create an ecosystem where research can be translated into practical solutions that strengthen India’s long-term water security.
MAJOR CHALLENGES
- Declining groundwater levels.
- Water scarcity in several regions.
- Pollution of rivers, lakes and groundwater.
- Inefficient water use in agriculture.
- Climate change-induced water stress.
- Increasing demand due to urbanisation and population growth.
Traditional approaches alone are insufficient to address these challenges. Therefore, innovation, technology and scientific research are becoming critical for achieving sustainable water management.

- The Water Mission is part of the broader:

- Launched under the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF).

FINANCIAL SUPPORT
Total Outlay
- The programme has a projected outlay of: ₹200 Crore over a period of five years.
Funding Partners
The funding will be jointly contributed by:
- Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF)
- Ministry of Jal Shakti
Support for Selected Consortia
- The programme will provide: Up to ₹20 Crore for selected multidisciplinary consortia.
- The funding can be used for:
- Technology development.
- Field assessment.
- Validation studies.
- Pilot testing.
- Deployment of solutions.
- This support is intended to help promising technologies move beyond the laboratory stage and achieve real-world impact.
