UNSC EMERGENCY SESSION ON LEBANON
The United Nations Security Council held an emergency meeting after Israeli airstrikes in Beirut, which killed at least a dozen people. The situation worsened with increased fighting between Hezbollah and Israeli forces, along with deadly explosions targeting Hezbollah members.
KEY EVENTS
- Airstrikes: The Israeli military hit southern Beirut, killing Ibrahim Aqil, a senior Hezbollah leader. The strike caused serious damage, collapsing buildings in the area.
- UN Warnings: UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric warned that the region is “on the brink of a catastrophe.”
- Human Rights Concerns: Volker Turk, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, condemned recent attacks involving pager and radio explosions, which killed at least 37 people and injured over 3,400. He called these incidents a troubling new kind of attack that harms civilians.
RECENT ATTACKS
Explosions on September 17-18 caused widespread panic and fear among people already facing a serious economic crisis. On September 20, another explosion resulted in at least 20 more deaths.
