NATIONAL MISSION FOR CLEAN GANGA (NMCG)
Why in news :
- Recently National Ganga Council(NGC) under NMCG met after three years, chaired by PM Modi.
About National mission for clean ganga :
- It is implemented by the National Council for Rejuvenation, Protection and Management of River Ganga also known as the National Ganga Council.
- It acted as implementation arm of National Ganga River Basin Authority (NGRBA) which was constituted under the provisions of the Environment (Protection) Act (EPA), 1986.
- The mission was established on 12th August 2011 under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 as a registered society.
- NMCG has a two tier management structure comprising of-
- Governing Council
- Executive Committee
RECENT FINDINGS OF NGC :
- The centre has released a total of Rs 13,709 crores to the NMCG under FY14-15 till October 31, 2022.
- Most of that sum was “released/expended” by the NMCG to state governments, State Missions for Clean Ganga (SMCG) and other agencies for implementation of projects under the programme.
- And out of this, Rs 4,205.41 crore was released to Uttar Pradesh, the highest among other states.

OBJECTIVES OF NMCG :
- To maintain the perennial flow of water without altering the seasonal variations.
- Conserve and regenerate the aquatic biodiversity and other aquatic biodiversity of the river Ganga.
- Draw participation of the masses in the process of protection, rejuvenation and management of the river.
- Focussing on rehabilitating and boosting the existing Sewage Treatment Plants and instant short term steps to curb pollution at exit points on the riverfront.
- To promote awareness among the public regarding river system.
- The government had launched Namami Gange in 2014-15 for a period up to March 31, 2021 to “rejuvenate” the Ganga and its tributaries.
- The programme was later extended for another 5 years till March 31, 2026.
