WORLD MIGRATION REPORT 2022
Why in news : Recently International Organisation of Migration (IOM) has released its celebrated “World Migration Report 2022”.
Findings of the report :
- There were 281 million international migrants globally in 2020.
- There were 169 million labour migrants in 2019, the figure touched 164 million in 2020.
- South Asia’s share in total migrants is nearly 40%.
- The South Asia Gulf Migratory corridor is the world’s largest migrant corridor.
- Other findings read out as “migration is not uniform across the world and is shaped by economic, geographic, demographic and other factors, resulting in distinct migration patterns, such as migration corridors developed over many years”.
About International Organisation of Migration :
- International Organization for Migration (IOM) is an intergovernmental organization that works closely with governmental, non-governmental, and intergovernmental partners in the field of migration to aid orderly and humane migration for the benefit of the human race.
- Its headquarter is in Geneva, Switzerland and it has a global presence with over hundred offices across the world.
INDIA and IOM :
- India was given observer’s status to IOM in the year 1991.
- Later in 2008, it became a member state.
- Recently, IOM and the Government of India signed a Memorandum of Understanding that aims to serve as a platform for the joint implementation of programmes and activities enhancing the management and facilitation of overseas employment of Indian workers worldwide.
