COMMISSION ON GENETIC RESOURCES FOR FOOD & AGRICULTURE (CGRFA)
KEY POINTS
- CGRFA-20 Meeting:
- The 20th meeting of the Commission on Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (CGRFA-20) was held in Rome, starting on March 24, 2025.
- This week-long session brought together global stakeholders to discuss the conservation of genetic resources for food and agriculture, with a focus on plant and forest genetic resources, climate adaptation, and policies for global forest security.
FOCUS AREAS FOR DISCUSSION
- Conservation of Genetic Resources: Strategies for conserving plant and forest genetic resources was discussed, highlighting the role of genetic diversity in enhancing climate resilience.
- Genetic Diversity in Climate Adaptation: The importance of genetic diversity in adapting agricultural practices to climate change was emphasized.
- Global Forest Security: The commission also discussed policies aimed at strengthening forest security globally.
- Sustainable Farming & Forestry: Experts highlighted sustainable agricultural and forestry practices, integrating genetic resources into policies, and funding mechanisms for biodiversity conservation.
MAJOR REPORTS LAUNCHED
- The Third Report on the State of the World’s Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture launched on March 24, 2025.
- The Second Report on the State of the World’s Forest Genetic Resources also launched on March 26, 2025.
- Plant Genetic Resources Report:
- The report assesses global trends, conservation efforts, and challenges related to plant genetic resources.
- It includes case studies on successful seed-saving initiatives, modern breeding techniques, and advancements in policies for crop diversity.
- It emphasizes the role of farmers, indigenous communities, and institutions in preserving agricultural biodiversity.
- Forest Genetic Resources Report:
- This report evaluates global forest biodiversity, focusing on the role of genetic diversity in sustainable forest management and climate adaptation.
- It introduces a new global information system for tracking forest genetic resources.
IMPORTANCE OF GENETIC RESOURCES
- Food Security & Biodiversity: Genetic resources are the foundation of food security, biodiversity, and sustainable agriculture.
- The conservation of these resources is critical for ensuring global food security in the face of climate change, pests, diseases, and deforestation.
- Challenges: Climate change, deforestation, and other environmental stressors threaten both crop and forest genetic diversity.
ABOUT CGRFA
- Established by FAO: The CGRFA was created in 1983 by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to address issues related to plant genetic resources (PGR).
- Expanded Mandate: Over time, its mandate has expanded to include all sectors of genetic resources for food and agriculture, including plant, animal, forest, aquatic, and microbial genetic resources.
- Cross-Cutting Topics: The commission also addresses food security, climate change, access to genetic resources, benefit-sharing, and digital sequence information (DSI) on genetic resources.
- Members: The commission has 179 members, including India and European Union.
