POLAND BACKS INDIA AMID US TARIFF THREATS OVER RUSSIAN OIL IMPORT
Why in News?
- On January 8, 2026, Poland publicly supported India amid rising tensions with the United States over India’s purchase of Russian oil.
- The support came at a time when US President Donald Trump has threatened very high tariffs on countries importing Russian energy during the Ukraine war.
POLAND’S STATEMENT & SUPPORT FOR INDIA
- Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said Poland was “satisfied” with India’s reduction in Russian oil imports.
- He stated that buying Russian oil helps finance Russia’s war effort in Ukraine and welcomed India’s recent cutback.
- Sikorski made the remarks after India’s first engagement with the Weimar Triangle in Paris.
- He also said the issue would be discussed further during his upcoming visit to India.
INDIA’S ENGAGEMENT WITH WEIMAR TRIANGLE
- External Affairs Minister Jaishankar represented India in its first-ever interaction with the Weimar Triangle.
- The meeting included:
- France’s Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot
- Representatives from Germany
- Poland’s Foreign Minister Sikorski.
WHAT IS WEIMAR TRIANGLE?
- The Weimar Triangle was formed in 1991 by France, Germany, and Poland.
- Its main objectives include:

- Security cooperation, especially on Russia–Ukraine issues
- Strengthening economic and cultural ties
- It is named after the German city Weimar, where the first meeting took place.
INDIA US TENSIONS OVER RUSSIAN OIL
- Relations between India and the US have become increasingly strained over India’s continued purchase of Russian oil.
- Donald Trump has repeatedly criticised India for these imports.
- Earlier, the US imposed:
- 25% reciprocal tariff on Indian goods
- An additional 25% penalty linked to Russian oil imports
- This pushed total duties on some Indian products to 50%.
THREAT OF EXTREMELY HIGH US TARIFF
- Trump has now warned of punitive tariffs up to 500% on countries that “knowingly purchase” Russian oil or uranium.
- A bipartisan bill supporting such penalties has reportedly been cleared by Trump.
- US Senator Lindsey Graham said a vote on the bill could happen soon.
- Trump stated that Prime Minister Narendra Modi was aware of his displeasure and warned tariffs could be raised “very quickly.”
