BUREAU OF ENERGY EFFICIENCY CELEBRATES 25TH ANNIVERSARY
Why in News?
- The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) celebrated its 25th Foundation Day on 1 March 2026 at the India Habitat Centre, New Delhi.
- The event was attended by Union Power Minister Shri Manohar Lal, senior government officials, policymakers, and stakeholders from across the country.
- On this occasion, several initiatives were launched to strengthen energy efficiency and climate action in India.

- During the event, the following initiatives were launched:
- BEE@25 Logo to mark the organisation’s 25-year milestone
- BEE Star Label Mobile Application
- Renewable Consumption Obligation (RCO) Portal
- These initiatives aim to promote energy efficiency, transparency, and consumer awareness.
ROLE OF BEE
- The BEE works under the Ministry of Power, Government of India.
- Its main objective is to promote energy conservation and efficient use of energy across different sectors.
- The Minister described energy efficiency as a preventive approach, stating that:
- Saving electricity today reduces the need for building new power plants and lowers carbon emissions.
INDIA’S PROGRESS IN CLIMATE COMMITMENTS
- The Power Minister highlighted India’s achievements in climate and energy transition:
- 36% reduction in emissions intensity of GDP since 2005
- 52% of installed electricity capacity from non-fossil fuel sources
- Achieved this ahead of the 2030 target

- Standards & Labelling (S&L) Programme
- Energy Conservation and Sustainable Building Code (ECSBC)
These programmes help reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions.
BEE STAR LABEL MOBILE APPLICATION
- The BEE Star Label App was launched to help consumers verify energy efficiency ratings of appliances.
- Features:
- Scan QR code on star-labelled products
- Access energy performance details
- Check product authenticity and compliance status
- This will improve consumer awareness and informed purchasing decisions.
RENEWABLE CONSUMPTION OBLIGATION
- The RCO Portal was launched to improve monitoring of renewable energy consumption obligations.
- The portal will:
- Improve data transparency
- Strengthen compliance monitoring
- Support data-driven policy decisions
- It will also improve coordination between government agencies and stakeholders.
ENERGY EFFICIENCY AS INDIA’S FIRST FUEL
- The Power Secretary described energy efficiency as India’s “First Fuel.”
- This means:
- The cheapest and cleanest energy is the energy that is saved.
- Efficient energy use helps balance energy security, affordability, and sustainability.
EMERGING AREAS OF FOCUS
The government highlighted new sectors requiring efficient energy management, such as:
- Data Centres
