INDIA AT PEACE SUMMIT IN SWITZERLAND
“Only proposals acceptable to both-Russia & Ukraine can lead to peace”.
India was among 7 countries which refused to endorse the outcome of the peace talks.
Around 80 countries endorsed the outcome which called for protecting territorial integrity of Ukraine.
THE POINTS FOR CONSIDERATION
The ongoing war of the Russian Federation against Ukraine continues to cause large-scale human suffering and destruction, and to create risks and crises with global repercussions said the declaration that focused on the three agendas
- Nuclear safety,
- Global food security and
- Humanitarian issues.
“All prisoners of war must be released by complete exchange. All deported and unlawfully dis- placed Ukrainian children, and all other Ukrainian civilians who were unlawfully detained, must be returned to Ukraine” the declaration emphasised.
ON WHAT BASIS WAS THE JOINT COMMUNIQUE BUILT?
The joint communique was built on Ukraine’s peace formula & the UN Charter & Resolutions.
WHAT HAS BEEN INDIA’S APPROACH & VIEWPOINT?
India participated in the summit (which was less likely earlier) and endorsed that its participation & continued engagement with all the stakeholders is to understand all perspectives, approaches & options to find a sustainable resolution to the conflict.
In India’s view, only those options, WHICH ARE ACCEPTABLE TO BOTH PARTIES (RUSSIA & UKRAINE) will lead to abiding peace.

China refused to attend the talks & declined the invitation.
