MYANMAR’S FOREIGN MINISTER VISITS INDIA
Why in News?
- Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing paid an official visit to India in June 2026 and held comprehensive discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on bilateral, regional and strategic issues.

Expansion of Educational Cooperation
- India announced a major expansion of educational opportunities for Myanmar students.
Mekong-Ganga ICCR Scholarships
- Existing scholarships: 36 annually
- Revised scholarships from 2026: 100 annually
This move aims to strengthen educational exchanges and long-term people-to-people relations.
Cooperation in Critical Minerals and Rare Earths
Both sides discussed enhancing cooperation in:
- Critical minerals & Rare earth elements
These resources have become increasingly important for:
- Electric vehicles
- Renewable energy technologies
- Electronics manufacturing
- Defence production
- Semiconductor industries
The two countries agreed to continue discussions and promote cooperation in these strategic sectors.

- Myanmar occupies a unique and indispensable position in India’s regional and geopolitical strategy.
Gateway to Southeast Asia and ASEAN
- Myanmar is India’s only Southeast Asian neighbour that shares both:
- A land border
- A maritime boundary
- As a result, it serves as India’s gateway to ASEAN and acts as a bridge connecting South Asia with Southeast Asia.
- Strong relations with Myanmar are therefore essential for India’s engagement with the broader Indo-Pacific region.
