PM MODI’S VISIT TO AUSTRALIA

Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently concluded his official three-day visit to Melbourne, Australia, from July 8 to July 10, 2026, as the second leg of his three-nation tour across the Indo-Pacific region.

INDIA AUSTRALIA TIES

India and Australia share a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership anchored in a shared vision of a free, open, and prosperous Indo-Pacific.

Driven by converging geopolitical, economic, and technological interests, the bilateral dynamic has rapidly evolved from the traditional “Three Cs” (Cricket, Curry, and Commonwealth) to the modern “Four Ds” (Democracy, Defence, Diaspora, and Dosti).

SIGNIFICANCE OF TIES

• Geo Strategic & Geopolitical Significance:
  • Indo-Pacific balancing: Both are two of the four Quad members. For India, Australia is critical to extending strategic reach into the Pacific; for Australia, India is the counterweight it needs in the Indian Ocean. This calls for greater maritime partnership also.
• Economic Significance:
  • TRADE: $48 Bn. {Target of 100 bn USD by 2030)
    • Australia has critical minerals, uranium, and energy resources India needs for its clean-energy transition.
    • India has manufacturing scale, a growing market, and a services/tech sector Australia wants access to.
  • Energy Security: Australia is a reliable supplier of LNG, coal, uranium, critical minerals & such like. Therefore it contributes in the energy security of India.
• Defence Significance: The relationship in this domain encompasses various aspects such as:
  • Defence Exercises
  • Intelligence Sharing Agreements
  • Potential Defence Trade

Ensuring maritime security in the Indo Pacific is one converging point.

• Diaspora: Approx 8 Lakh members of the Indian Diaspora are living in Australia. They are our Cultural Ambassadors and contribute in the overall development of Australia.

CHALLENGES

• Inclination of Australia towards West.
• Racial Discrimination against Indians in Australia.
• India’s Protectionist policies in trade.
• Imbalanced Trade
• China Factor

WAY FORWARD

India & Australia are natural partners in the Indo Pacific region. Both should look to enhance their partnership to a new level seeking more balance. Diaspora related challenges should be tackled by the Australia.

Indian exports should increase to balance the overall trade.
