THE 2026 ASSAM FLOODS
The 2026 floods have been among the most severe in recent years.
Heavy rainfall across Assam as well as upstream catchments in Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland caused rivers and tributaries to swell rapidly, inundating large parts of Upper Assam.
More than seven lakh people have been affected, with significant loss of life, damage to crops, infrastructure and wildlife habitats.
Relief and rescue operations continue, while both the state and central governments have announced assistance.
WHY ASSAM FLOODS EVERY YEAR?
Physical Geography
1. Brahmaputra River
- Origin: Tibet (Yarlung Tsangpo)
- Enters India through Arunachal Pradesh
- Flows through Assam
- Enters Bangladesh

Characteristics
- Braided river
- Extremely high sediment load
- Frequent channel shifting
- Very wide floodplain
The Brahmaputra carries one of the world’s highest sediment loads.

2. Huge Catchment Area
Catchment extends across
- Tibet
- Arunachal Pradesh
- Nagaland
- Bhutan
- Meghalaya
- Assam
Rain anywhere in this basin ultimately reaches Assam.

3. Heavy Monsoon Rainfall
Assam receives
2000–3000 mm rainfall annually
Reasons
- Bay of Bengal branch of monsoon
- Orographic rainfall
- Moisture-laden winds
- Western disturbances (occasionally)
Continuous rainfall causes rivers to overflow.
4. Gradient
In Arunachal
- Rivers flow rapidly
Entering Assam
- Gradient decreases sharply
- River slows
- Sediment deposition increases
- River bed rises
Hence flood risk rises.
WHY HAVE FLOODS BECOME WORST?
- Climate Change
- Deforestation
- Encroachment
- Wetland Destruction
- Riverbank Erosion
- Sand Mining
IMPACT OF THE FLOOD

WHAT STEPS ARE BEING TAKEN BY THE GOVERNMENT?
The government is responding to the Assam floods through rescue operations, financial aid, and relief distribution, led by key efforts such as:
- Deploying disaster teams
- Rescuing & Rehabilitating the affected and
- Providing central financial support.
RESCUE & RELIEF OPERATIONS
Deploying the NDRF, SDRF, and armed forces for round-the-clock evacuation and essential supply distribution in hard-hit districts.
Distributing clothes and essentials to over 4 lakh women and children in severely impacted areas like Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, and Golaghat.
Providing fresh sets of free textbooks through the state textbook corporation for students who lost their learning materials.
FINANCIAL SUPPORT
- Receiving ₹1,000 crore in sanctioned assistance from the central government, with initial funds quickly funneled to local district authorities.
- Mobilizing a whole-of-government approach where state departments, local MPs, and MLAs monitor ground operations directly until conditions normalize.
- Deploying an Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT) to assess damages and strategize long-term rehabilitation
LONG TERM SOLUTIONS NEEDED
- Structural Infrastructure & River Management.
- Construction of embankments
- The Brahmaputra Master plan
- Anti erosion & pro siltation works
- Urban Flood Mitigation.
- Nature based storage enhancement (Wetlands revival)
- Applying Advance Early Warning systems.
