WHY TRUMP WANTS TO BUY GREENLAND?

Why Does Greenland Matter to the US?

Greenland is an island of great value for many reasons, particularly for the US. The main reasons are its strategic location, natural resources, and the changes happening in the Arctic region due to climate change.

STRATEGIC IMPORTANCE

  • Geographical Location: Greenland is located in the North Atlantic Ocean, between Europe and North America. It is close to Canada, which makes it an important spot for both military and trade activities.
  • If the US controlled Greenland, it would be able to monitor movements across the Atlantic and have a stronger presence in the Northern Hemisphere.
  • Cold War History: During the Cold War, Greenland became very important. The US set up a large air base called Thule Air Base (now called Pituffik Space Base) on the island.
  • This base allowed the US to watch for any missile threats from the Soviet Union.
  • Even today, the base helps monitor threats from countries like Russia, China, and North Korea.
  • Missile Defense: Greenland’s location helps the US track and stop potential missile threats.
  • The US can also launch missiles from Greenland to defend itself or attack other regions.
  • This military presence makes the island very valuable for national security.

NATURAL RESOURCES

  • Minerals and Rare Earths: Greenland is rich in rare earth minerals, which are used to make mobile phones, electric car batteries, and other electronics.
  • These minerals are also used in weapons systems.
  • Currently, China is the main supplier of these minerals, but the US wants to reduce its dependence on China.
  • Greenland could provide the US with a safer, more reliable source of these minerals.
  • Fishing: Greenland’s waters are rich in fish like cod and shrimp.
  • The US would also be interested in controlling these fishing resources. Greenland’s seafood industry is important to the global market.

THE ARCTIC & CLIMATE CHANGE

  • Melting Ice: Climate change is melting the ice in the Arctic, opening up new shipping routes and the possibility of accessing more resources.
  • These changes have made the Arctic more important to world powers.
  • Arctic Control: As other countries like Russia and China increase their presence in the Arctic, the US wants to make sure it doesn’t lose influence in the region.
  • Greenland, with its resources and strategic location, plays a key role in this competition. Controlling Greenland would give the US an advantage in the Arctic.
  • New Shipping Routes: The melting ice could create new shipping paths, reducing the travel time for goods between North America, Europe, and Asia. Having a strong presence in Greenland would allow the US to control or benefit from these new routes.

WHEN DID THE US LAST TRY TO ACQUIRE GREENLAND?

Trump is not the first US president to show interest in Greenland. There have been several attempts to buy or control the island in the past.

2.1. Donald Trump’s Proposal (2019)

  • Trump’s Offer: In 2019, President Donald Trump suggested buying Greenland, calling it a “large real estate deal.” He was interested in the island’s strategic location and its resources, particularly rare earth minerals.
  • Rejection from Denmark: The idea was quickly rejected by Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, who called it “absurd.”
  • Greenland’s government also made it clear that the island was not for sale.
  • After the rejection, Trump canceled a planned state visit to Denmark, which led to some diplomatic tension between the two countries.

2.2. President Harry S. Truman’s Attempt (1946)

  • Truman’s Offer: In 1946, President Harry S. Truman offered Denmark $100 million for Greenland.
  • Truman believed that Greenland’s location was vital for US defense during the Cold War.
  • He also suggested that the US could exchange some parts of Alaska for Greenland, but this idea never went forward.

2.3. Early US Interest (1867)

  • Recognition of Value: In 1867, US officials acknowledged Greenland’s important location and resources.
  • However, at the time, the US did not make any formal moves to acquire the island, though it was seen as a valuable asset.

HAS USA PURCHASED TERRITORIES BEFORE?

The United States has a history of buying land and territories. Greenland would not be the first time the US has expanded its territory through a purchase.

3.1. The Purchase of Alaska (1867)

  • Alaska Purchase: In 1867, the United States bought Alaska from Russia for $7.2 million (about 2 cents per acre).
  • This purchase added about 1.5 million square kilometers of land to the US, making it a major expansion.
  • Strategic Importance: Initially, many Americans thought the purchase was a mistake.
  • It was called “Seward’s Folly” after the US Secretary of State William Seward who negotiated the deal.
  • However, Alaska turned out to be valuable for its resources like oil, natural gas, and minerals, as well as its strategic military importance during the Cold War.

3.2. The Louisiana Purchase (1803)

  • Louisiana Purchase: In 1803, the US bought more than 2 million square kilometers of land from France for just $15 million (about 3 cents per acre).
  • This was one of the biggest land deals in history and nearly doubled the size of the US at the time.
  • Manifest Destiny: The Louisiana Purchase helped the US expand its territory and played a major role in the idea of Manifest Destiny, which was the belief that the US was destined to expand across North America.

3.3. The Danish West Indies (1917)

  • Virgin Islands Purchase: In 1917, the US bought the Danish West Indies, a group of islands in the Caribbean, for $25 million in gold.
  • These islands were renamed the US Virgin Islands and became an important military and economic asset in the Caribbean.
  • Strategic Importance: The Virgin Islands were seen as an important base for the US military and a way to protect US interests in the Caribbean during World War I and beyond.
