EXPLODING PAGERS IN LEBANON

  • Hundreds of handheld pagers exploded across Lebanon and parts of Syria, primarily impacting members of Hezbollah.
  • The prime suspect was Israel, a country with a storied history in executing remote and targeted attacks to take out its adversaries.
  • Most of those impacted were said to be members of the Iran-backed Shia militant group Hezbollah.

MORE ABOUT THE ATTACK

Casualties

  • Injuries: Approximately 2,750 individuals were injured.
  • Fatalities: 8 confirmed deaths.
  • The explosions occurred in various locations, including busy streets, homes, barber shops, and shops.

Mechanism of Attack

Initial Speculations

  • Initial theories suggested a hack that caused pager batteries to overheat.
  • However, this was dismissed based on the explosion characteristics observed in videos from the scene.

WAS IT DUE TO SUPPLY CHAIN TAMPERING?

Russia-born, US-based security expert Dmitri Alperovitch described the incident as possibly one of the most extensive supply chain attacks in history. After heightened tensions in Gaza, Hezbollah had cautioned its members against using mobile phones due to potential tampering by Israeli intelligence. This led to a reliance on pagers for communication.

  • New Batch of Pagers: Recent deliveries of pagers raised suspicions that Israel may have infiltrated the supply chain, potentially embedding military-grade explosives within the devices.
  • Explosive Mechanism: Reports suggest that the pagers were programmed to beep before exploding, indicating a sophisticated method of detonation.

WHAT ARE PAGERS?

Pagers, also known as beepers, are compact telecommunications devices used primarily for receiving messages. They were particularly popular before the widespread adoption of mobile phones.

Key Features:

  • One-Way Communication: Most pagers allow users to receive messages but not send them back, although two-way pagers do exist.
  • Simple Interface: They typically display numeric or alphanumeric messages on a small screen.
  • Battery Operated: Pagers are portable and powered by batteries, making them usable in various locations.
  • Dedicated Network: Pagers operate on a specific network designed for pager communication, often providing better coverage in areas with poor mobile service.

Uses:

  • Medical Field: Commonly used by healthcare professionals to receive alerts and messages.
  • Emergency Services: Utilized by first responders for immediate communication.
  • Business Communication: Used in various industries for quick notifications.

Historical Context:

Pagers saw peak usage in the 1980s and 1990s but have largely been replaced by mobile phones. However, they remain in use in specific fields where reliable and quick communication is necessary.

In the context of the recent incidents in Lebanon, pagers were reportedly used by members of Hezbollah as a means of communication amid fears of surveillance on mobile phones.
