INDIA’S VENUS ORBITER MISSION
The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the Venus Orbiter Mission (VOM) aimed at scientific exploration of Venus, following missions to the Moon and Mars.
OBJECTIVE & SIGNIFICANCE
- Objective: The mission seeks to enhance understanding of Venus atmosphere, geology, and other scientific phenomena by generating substantial data.
- Significance:
- Venus is the closest planet to Earth and is believed to have formed under similar conditions. Studying it can provide insights into how planetary environments evolve differently.
- The mission aims to investigate the processes affecting Venus’s atmosphere and surface, contributing to the understanding of both Venus and Earth.
ISRO’S ROLE & FUNDING
- The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will develop and launch the spacecraft.
- The mission will be managed through ISRO’s established practices, ensuring effective oversight.
- Funding:
- Total approved budget for VOM is ₹1,236 crore.
- Of this, ₹824 crore will be allocated to spacecraft development, including payloads and technology, as well as ground station support and launch vehicle costs.
TIMELINE
- Launch Date: The mission is set for March 2028.
- Expected Outcomes:
- The mission aims to address key scientific questions and produce valuable data for the scientific community.
- It will lay the groundwork for future planetary missions with larger payloads and improved orbital insertion techniques.
INDUSTRY & EDUCATIONAL ENGAGEMENT
- Collaboration:
- Significant involvement from Indian industries is expected in developing the spacecraft and launch vehicle.
- The mission will also engage various academic institutions, offering training to students in aspects such as design, development, and testing.
