KAZIND 2024

The 8th edition of the India-Kazakhstan Joint Military Exercise, known as KAZIND-2024, has started at the Surya Foreign Training Node in Auli, Uttarakhand.

This exercise will run from September 30 to October 13, 2024.

KAZIND has been held annually since 2016, with the previous edition taking place in Otar, Kazakhstan, from October 30 to November 11, 2023.

PARTICIPATION DETAILS

  • The Indian Armed Forces are represented by 120 personnel from the KUMAON Regiment of the Indian Army, along with members from other branches, including the Indian Air Force.
  • The contingent from Kazakhstan mainly consists of personnel from their Land Forces and Airborne Assault Troopers.

OBJECTIVES

  • The main aim of this joint exercise is to improve the military capabilities of both nations for conducting counter-terrorism operations in non-conventional scenarios, as outlined under Chapter VII of the United Nations Charter.
  • The focus will be on operations in semi-urban and mountainous terrain.
  • Ensuring a high level of physical fitness.
  • Practicing and refining tactical drills.
  • Sharing best practices for military operations.

TACTICAL DRILLS

During the exercise, several tactical drills will be conducted, including:

  • Joint responses to terrorist actions.
  • Setting up a Joint Command Post.
  • Creating an Intelligence and Surveillance Centre.
  • Securing helipads and landing sites.
  • Combat free fall and Special Heliborne Operations.
  • Conducting Cordon and Search operations.
  • Utilizing drones and counter-drone systems.

KAZIND-2024 will allow both armies to share effective tactics, techniques, and procedures for conducting joint operations, promoting inter-operability, friendship, and cooperation between the two nations’ forces.

ABOUT KUMAON REGIMENT

  • The Kumaon Regiment is the most decorated regiment of the Indian Army.
  • It dates back to the 18th century and has participated in every major campaign of both the British Indian Army and the Indian Army, including the two World Wars.
  • The regiment recruits soldiers mainly from the Kumaon division and the Ahirs from the plains.

Historical Background

  • Long-standing Ties: India and Kazakhstan share a rich historical relationship that spans over 2000 years, with exchanges in goods and cultural ideas, including the spread of Buddhism and Sufi

Political Relations

  1. Early Recognition: India was one of the first countries to recognize Kazakhstan’s independence after the Soviet Union’s collapse. Diplomatic ties were established on February 22, 1992. The Indian Embassy opened in Almaty in May 1992, with Kazakhstan opening its embassy in New Delhi in 1993. When Kazakhstan moved its capital to Astana in 1997, India shifted its representative office there in 2003.
  • Visits: Significant visits have occurred between the two countries:
    • Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru visited Almaty in 1955, followed by S. Radhakrishnan in 1956.
    • President Nursultan Nazarbayev visited India several times, starting in 1992. His 2009 visit upgraded relations to a strategic partnership.
    • Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also visited Kazakhstan and participated in major summits, enhancing ties further.
  • Recent Developments: On January 27, 2022, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev attended the First India-Central Asia Summit. India’s participation in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) has also solidified these ties.
