On the occasion of World Tourism Day (September 27th, 2024), the Ministry of Tourism in India introduced a national responsible tourism initiative titled ‘Paryatan Mitra & Paryatan Didi’. This initiative aims to enhance the tourism experience across 50 destinations throughout the country, promoting a more welcoming and hospitable environment for visitors.

VISION, OBJECTIVES & IMPLEMENTATION

The primary vision behind ‘Paryatan Mitra and Paryatan Didi’ is to showcase the essence of “Incredible India” through the efforts of “Incredible Indians.” By fostering a culture of hospitality, the initiative seeks to create memorable experiences for tourists, ultimately leading to a more positive perception of India as a travel destination.

It is being implemented in a Pilot Program mode.

The initiative was initially piloted in six diverse tourist locations:

  • Orchha, Madhya Pradesh
  • Gandikota, Andhra Pradesh
  • Bodh Gaya, Bihar
  • Aizawl, Mizoram
  • Jodhpur, Rajasthan
  • Port Blair, Andaman & Nicobar Islands

TRAINING & CAPACITY BUILDING

The initiative emphasizes comprehensive tourism-related training for a wide range of individuals who interact with tourists. This includes:

  • Service Staff: Employees at airports, railway stations, bus stations, hotels, and restaurants
  • Local Community Members: Homestay owners, tour guides, police personnel, street vendors, and shopkeepers
  • Students: Engaging the youth to enhance community involvement

Training topics encompass the significance of tourism, cleanliness, safety, sustainability, and the importance of high-quality hospitality. Participants are also educated about local stories, hidden gems, and tourism attractions, enabling them to share authentic narratives with visitors.

FOCUS ON WOMEN & YOUTH

A significant focus of the initiative is on empowering women and youth to develop new tourism products and experiences. These may include:

  • Food Tours: Culinary experiences showcasing regional cuisine
  • Craft Tours: Experiences centered around local artisans and crafts
  • Nature Treks: Outdoor activities that explore natural landscapes

By fostering skills in these areas, the initiative aims to create new employment opportunities for locals, allowing them to engage in roles such as homestay providers, cultural guides, and adventure facilitators.

DIGITAL LITERACY & GLOBAL VISIBILITY

  • This component is crucial for ensuring that the unique experiences they create can be easily discovered and marketed to tourists on both national and global platforms.
