Vishing = Voice + Phishing
Voice = A voice call is received. The person on the call pretends to be someone in the authority (from a govt department, or the telecom company).
Phishing = Phishing is a cyberattack that involves sending fraudulent messages that appear to come from a legitimate source, such as an email or text message.
Therefore, a in a Vishing attack, a call is received. Over the call, the person takes you in confidence & makes you download an application, or click on a link. Once done, your cyberspace is compromised.
HOW TO SPOT A VISHING SCAM?
- It can be a pre recorded message aiming to instill fear in you.
- It can be a call from a government servant.
- The caller may be using fear and urgency tactics.
- Poor audio quality where if you listen carefully, there could be robotic voices from the background.
